Conditional Sentence Type

Type 1

A possible or likely future condition.

If + Simple Present, will + base form.

If it rains, I will stay at home.

     

If I have time, I will call you.

Type 2

An unlikely or hypothetical condition.

If + Simple Past, would + base form.

If I had money, I would buy a new car.

     

If I were you, I would take that job offer.

Type 3

An unreal or impossible condition.

If + Past Perfect, would have + past participle.

If I had studied harder, I would have passed the exam.

     

If she had known, she would have come to the party.

Note: In all types of conditional sentences, the "if" clause introduces the condition, and the main clause expresses the result or consequence.

Type 1 Conditional Sentence Examples:

  • If it rains, I will stay at home.
  • If I have time, I will call you.

Type 2 Conditional Sentence Examples:

  • If I had money, I would buy a new car.
  • If I were you, I would take that job offer.

Type 3 Conditional Sentence Examples:

  • If I had studied harder, I would have passed the exam.
  • If she had known, she would have come to the party.
