to erect a building

to let someone stay at your home

to raise or increase something

The monument was put up after the WW II. (constructed)

If you do not find a hotel, I can always put you up. (let you stay at my place)

They have put up the rent by $100 a month. (increased)

 

  1. put across

to communicate something

He is very good in putting his ideas across. (communicating)

  1. put out

to extinguish a candle, lamp, etc

to be offended

to take something out of your house and leave it for someone to collect

 

Put out the candle. (extinguish)

Her angry tone put him out. (offended)

Put the garbage out. (take out)

 

  1. put down

 

to place something on a surface or the ground

 to record something in writing

to suppress something

 

Please put the vase down gently. (place)

The meeting is next week. Put it down in your calendar.  (note)

We cannot put down the public anger with force.

  1. put back  

to delay something

to reschedule

Put the clock back ten minutes. (delay)

The film’s release date has been put back. (rescheduled)

  1. put away

to store something in a usual place

Put away the dishes instead of leaving them on the table. (store)

  1. put up with

to bear or accept somebody/something that is unpleasant, annoying, etc

I don’t know how you put up with the noise. (bear)
