The Noun: A noun names something. A noun is anything one can talk about (film, football, Messi), including things one cannot see or touch. E.g honesty, love, happiness |
Common and Proper Nouns: Unlike a common noun, a proper noun names particular person, place, thing or idea. Common nouns are capitalized only when they start a sentence, while proper nouns are always written with the first letter capital. Concrete and Abstract Nouns: Concrete nouns name touchable things, persons, and places- things that can be sensed with sight, hearing, taste, touch, and smell. E.g. fire, teacher, perfume, ketchup, cow, Statue of Liberty. Abstract nouns are usually ideas, feelings, qualities, or characteristics e.g. honesty, love, confidence, courage, talent, etc. |
Collective Nouns: A collective noun is singular in form, but it names a group of persons, things, etc. e.g Fleet means a number of warships or planes; Jury is used for a group of people who assist the judge during a trial. Note: collective nouns do not have a plural form. team (of players), litter(young of some animals), pride (a group of lions) staff (of members), pod (of peas), pack (of wolves), bouquet (of flowers), bunch (of grapes, keys), herd (of sheep, cows) |
Compound Nouns: A compound is made of two or more words that may be written as one word, as separated words, or as hyphenated word, and name one person, one place, or one thing. e.g. chairperson, chief executive officer (CEO), Eiffel Tower, tablecloth, son-in-law, |
